So…Internet’s been pretty crazy as of late, no?
Twitter has been crumbling, now so is Reddit. Tumblr teeters on the edge of usability. The trouble is, I used to use each of these sites regularly. Twitter was a great place for my little jokes and whatnot – now ruined by profit-minded billionaires and right-wing madness. I still visit Twitter, but no more than half an hour a week. Reddit is also now ruined by billionaire profit-brainrot – in a way, our own Library of Alexandria collapse. I was so disheartened by leadership’s actions that I nuked my account. I still maintain an active presence on Tumblr, but that’s only tenable due to the wonders of XKit allowing me to hide recommended content, which saps my mental energy, and focus on the interesting stuff from people I follow. I still use Tumblr on mobile but it gives me psychic damage with all of the ads and algorithmic content. Additionally, I find it’s not the best place for my long-form thoughts, and many things I want to talk about don’t find into the niche I find myself in there.
So those are my issues with my past and current social media. Now, my reasons for starting this website specifically:
- Control. As long as I lease this website from my domain registrar and host, I control whatever goes on here. That could be blog posts, but it could also be other pages with information etc. I want to use this as an archive as much as a place for my own thoughts.
- Variety. I can do all sorts of things here – I’m not beholden to a specific type of content.
- Obscurity. I am intentionally not trying very hard with the SEO on this site – if people find things here, that’s by word of mouth, not any algorithmic nonsense. I’m not looking for cheap engagement.
That’s all I can think of for now! This was, essentially, a test post.
